Both Jake and Kelly wear dramatic all-black outfits, with Kelly sporting some dark eye makeup. At the end of the video, they meet up on the stage to combine their voices for an epic finale.

In the song, Jake and Kelly sing about the end of a relationship, with the chorus including the lyrics, “I’m gonna hate you as long and as much / As I would’ve loved you.” Jake told Country Now that the track is “about someone who has so much love to give, but due to the other person’s decisions, that love turns into a hate that lasts forever.”

What Was Jake’s Experience Working With Kelly?

“I’m so proud of you,” Kelly Clarkson wrote on Instagram about Jake Hoot’s new EP, encouraging people to listen. Jake gave Kelly her third win on The Voice in 2019, and was also her first male artist to take home the trophy.

“She’s just a wealth of knowledge and she’s a huge supporter and a huge encourager,” Jake told People of Kelly after his win. “Hopefully the road doesn’t end here, and I’ll be able to get to work with her moving forward. But everything’s just been incredible.”

Jake told Everything Nash that Kelly had previously suggested they collaborate. “She called me back immediately and she said, ‘I want to shout this from the rooftops. Yes, I’m in,’” he recalled of her first time hearing the song.

The pair managed to coordinate their busy schedules (including Jake’s upcoming wedding) to record the song and shoot the music video. Jake said “it just all worked perfectly.”
