CMA Awards Bring Together Talent Show Country Royalty
The CMA Awards were last night, honoring country music’s best artists and songs of the year. And it was packed with talent show country royalty! From host Carrie Underwood to award winner Keith Urban, the stage constantly had ties to our favorite shows. Many performed and some even won the night’s biggest awards!
Let’s recap just who was part of the CMAs last night!
American Idol‘s Carrie Underwood hosted the CMA Awards for the 11th year in a row with fellow country superstar Brad Paisley. It was a very eventful night for Carrie! First, she revealed that she’s having a boy. She also sang her new hit single “Love Wins” in what might have been the best performance of the night. Carrie then went on to win Female Vocalist of the Year for her fifth time! In all that time, she also had eight wardrobe changes and carried the comedy of the night. PHEW! Even I’m exhausted just hearing all she did. Carrie sure has come a long way since winning season 4 of American Idol.
Former American Idol judge Keith Urban was all over the CMA Awards too! Keith was first park of a tribute to Ricky Staggs with a handful of fellow country artists. He then performed his own song, “Never Comin’ Down.” Finally, thirteen years after winning Entertainer of the Year for his first time, Keith picked up his second award in the category last night. His acceptance speech was touching and he was able to share a sweet moment with his wife, Nicole Kidman. He was also nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year but lost to Chris Stapleton and Kacey Musgraves, respectively. I don’t think he was disappointed though! He did win the biggest award of the night after all. And it was presented to him by none other than current Idol judge, Lionel Richie.
The Voice‘s fifth coach, Kelsea Ballerini, was nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year. While she didn’t win the award, she did have a great performance! Kelsea sang her new hit song “Miss Me More” during the CMA Awards. But she faced backlash online from fans who thought the song wasn’t “country enough.” Some viewers complained that the song was too pop-inspired to be part of a country music awards show.
American Idol judge Luke Bryan kicked off the CMA Awards last night with a dynamic performance! He and a handful of country artists and friends covered his song, “What Makes You Country.” Luke Bryan was also nominated for Entertainer of the Year, a category which he lost to Keith Urban. Luke has been nominated for the award the past six years and has won it twice, in 2014 and 2015.
Idol runner-up Lauren Alaina sang a song to remember Dottie West at last night’s CMA Awards. Lauren sang her song, “A Lesson in Leavin'” in a short tribute to the artist. Dottie was recently inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, prompting the tribute. However, viewers criticized the tribute for being short and for Lauren’s performance just not being very good. I think Lauren represented Idol well though! She was nominated for New Artist of the Year this year as well. But later in the night, she lost that award to Luke Combs.
